Sheppard Nips Thornton Jr for Win at Davenport

Brandon Sheppard all smiles after his $6,000 win on the quarter-mile at Davenport.

May 29, 2020 at Davenport Speedway ($6,000 to win)

(Recap by Tyson Graves)

It was the closest race in World of Outlaw Late Model Series history on the quarter-mile at Davenport Speedway. 0.007 seconds is what kept Ricky Thornton Jr from going back to back on tour. Ricky won last weekend at Jackson Motorplex capturing his first win. He kept up the momentum leading the race in the late stages battling with last years series champion Brandon Sheppard. The two traded sliders in the last couple laps with Sheppard coming out on top in the slimiest of margins.

38 late models checked in Friday night to compete on the quarter-mile at Davenport. A mix of series regulars and regional standouts made for a very stout field. In qualifying we saw Bobby Pierce from Oakwood, IL set a new track record with a lap of 14.415 seconds.

In heat race one Bobby Pierce used his front row start to get out front and dominate the race. Series regular Cade Dillard finsihed second and made it into the redraw. Last weekends winner Ricky Thornton Jr and Jimmy Mars got the other transfer spots to the main.

Heat race two was all Brandon Sheppard after starting on the pole. Other series regulars Chase Junghans and Ricky Weiss came home second and third. Local Iowa standout Justin Kay got the final transfer spot. Justin also picked up the IMCA Late Model win in the supporting class of the nights event.

it was an Iowa dominated heat race number three as Oxford, Iowa Chris Simpson took the win with Brian Birkhofer coming home runner up. Chris Madden and Jason Feger came home third and fourth.

Illinois driver Ryan Unzicker flexed his muscles on the national stage picking up heat race number four win. Shannon Babb in the new Bloomquist Chassis came in second. Bob Gardner and series regular Boom Brings also advanced.

B-Main number one was loaded as heavy hitters had to battle for three transfer spots into the main event. The Bluegrass Bandit, Darrell Lanigan was able to win holding off a charging Scott Bloomquist. Frank Heckenast Jr grabbed the final transfer leaving Dennis Erb Jr and Rookie of the Year contender Ashton Winger with provisionals in order to start the 30 lap main event.

In the second B-Main regional driver Rich Bell held on for the win over David Eckrich. Local racer Joel Callahan got the final spot into the feature. This left Matt Cosner looking for a provisional as well.

Brandon Sheppard and Ricky Thornton Jr battle for the lead in the closing laps.
