January 3, 2020 at Vado Speedway Park
Thursday night the World of Outlaw season got into full swing with an open practice at the new Vado Speedway Park in New Mexico. The season will officially kick off tonight with the first of three nights of racing in the event dubbed "Battle at the Border." Last night 32 cars took to the clock in the first track action of 2020 in late model competition. It was last years series champion Brandon Sheppard who found himself on top of the speed chart after the evening was over. Brandon ran a total of 17 laps as he shook down the Rocket house car. Second quick was Scott Bloomquist in the new Drydene sponsored #0. Scott was consulted by the builders of the Vado track when it was being built. Scott told representatives of the track in an interview before action last night that the track looked to be in great shape and should provide some great racing.
Other notables in attendance and taking times in practice last night was 2019 Summer Nationals champion Brian Shirley who posted a top 10 time in practice. 2019 series rookie of the year Ricky Weiss and Scott Bloomquist teammate Chris Madden also shook down their new rides Thursday night. Billy Moyer and Billy Moyer Jr both made the trip out west and had their #21 machines out for practice. Mike Marlar, Bobby Pierce, Chase Junghans & Darrell Lanigan also participated. The driver turning the most laps was Cade Dillard, he turned 30 laps on the speedway Thursday night. Cade has already had success at the speedway back in October winning the $20,000 to win USRA Fall Nationals in a modified.
